Arriving in Zakynthos a visitor will typically begins in the town of Zakynthos. The whole of the old town of Zakynthos was leveled by a disastrous earthquake and the fires that followed in August 1953. The town that is seen today is a reconstruction, based largely on the pattern of the original town of Zakynthos.
Memories of the legendary Zante live on in the streets, the square, the harbor, and the castle. As a visitor walks down the harbor from where the ferry boat from the mainland has docked they see the Platia Solomou. The square is highlighted by a statue of Dionisius Solomos.
